Younger investors have a significant advantage vs. previous generations: a longer time horizon. By starting your investment journey early, younger investors can benefit longer from compound growth returns, or recover from stock market downturns.
What is Time Horizon?
The time horizon is the amount of time you plan to hold an investment before you need the principle money back. This decision plays a key factor in your investment strategy by helping decide which investments to make, based on risk tolerance (more on that later).
⏳ Short-term (less than 5 years): Investing for near-term goals, such as saving for a car or vacation, or paying down debt.
📅 Medium-term (5-10 years): Investing for medium-term goals, such as the down payment for a home.
🏖️ Long-term (10+ years): Investing for longer-term far-out goals, such as retirement planning or saving for college for a young child.

Factors that Impact Time Horizon
Time horizon dictates how long you plan to park your money in an investment with an estimated (or pre-determined) appreciation yield before needing it to returned for other projects, such as re-deployment into new investment opportunities, or personal expenses.
💰 Investment Goal: What is the financial goal you're trying to achieve, such as saving for a vacation or paying down debt. Or a longer stretch goal, such as the down payment on a car, home, college or other large purchase.
📅 Time Duration: What is the time-frame (in months or years) you're dedicating to achieve the investment goal.
🌊 Liquidity: How important is it to liquidate and exit your position (whether the investment is up or down) to return the invested capital to cash? A bank savings rate might offer 3.9%, while a bank CD offers 4.5% for 18-months.
🚀 Appreciation Goal: What is the desired rate of return for the investment, based on time duration and risk tolerance.
🎲 Risk Tolerance: How much risk are you comfortable taking with the principle of money you’ve invested? A stock that might run up 40-50% in 12-months, might equally drop 20% on bad quarterly earnings.
